Ok, fine, if Unibet is leaving the United States than Mohegan Sun will go its own way in Pennsylvania.

During a license renewal meeting for its Pennsylvania casino on Jan. 24 with the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board, Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment presented a plan to develop and launch its own iGaming app in the state after Unibet pulls its services out of the country. The MGE will take over the interactive iGaming license from its partner Unibet in the state.

Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment (MGE) developed and currently runs its own iGaming app in New Jersey.

Unibet Leaving North America

The Kindred Group, the parent company of Unibet, announced in November 2023 that it will cease operations in both the United States and Canada. The complete withdrawal is expected to be completed by the end of the second quarter in 2024. According to the announcement, the company will re-allocate resources towards existing core markets to improve its ability to capitalize on market potential and gain market share.

“The cost reduction actions announced today are both necessary and decisive. While it is never a desire to inform valued colleagues of redundancies, this puts us in a stronger position to secure long-term growth for Kindred across our locally regulated core markets. We can now focus our resources and tech capacity towards strategic initiatives and selected markets where we see clear potential to grow our market share,” said Nils Andén, Interim CEO of Kindred Group, in the announcement.

Rich Roberts, President of Digital Gaming for MGE, told the gaming control board that MGE will be developing its own iGaming app for the state instead of contracting with an outside company. Its soft-launch is scheduled for March 18 with a full launch slated for April 18.

Unibet will be leaving and closing its date in June 2024, he noted, but an exact date is still being determined.

MGE developed and runs its own iGaming app in neighboring New Jersey.

MGE License Renewed in Pennsylvania

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board unanimously approved the renewal of MGE’s category 1 horse track casino license of Down Racing, LP, operator of Mohegan Pennsylvania in Luzerne County.

According to the gaming control board, Since opening in November 2006 through December 2023, Mohegan Pennsylvania has generated $4,035,535,943 in gross revenue from the play of retail slot machines and table games, sports wagering and iGaming, and has returned to the Commonwealth a total of $2,066,749,049 from tax revenue, assessments and fees. Mohegan Pennsylvania currently operates 1,630 slot machines and 67 table games while employing 891 persons.
